EN 140 is a European standard that specifies the requirements for half masks and quarter masks used as respiratory protective devices (RPDs). These are masks that cover the nose, mouth, and optionally the chin, and are used in conjunction with replaceable filters or as part of a respirator system.
🔹 Standard Title:
EN 140: Respiratory protective devices – Half masks and quarter masks – Requirements, testing, marking
âś… Suitable For:
EN 140 applies to reusable half masks and quarter masks, which are commonly used in:
- Industrial environments (construction, painting, sanding, welding, etc.)
- Chemical handling
- Agricultural applications (pesticides, fertilizers)
- Healthcare and emergency services (when paired with appropriate filters)
These masks do not include filtering facepieces like FFP1/FFP2/FFP3 (which are covered by EN 149).
🧪 Testing Methods:
The standard specifies a number of mechanical, performance, and ergonomic tests. Key test methods include:
- Visual Inspection
- For general construction, finish, and completeness.
- Inward Leakage Test
- Measures how much unfiltered air enters the mask during use.
- Breathing Resistance Test
- Measures the resistance to airflow during inhalation and exhalation.
- Ensures comfort and usability.
- Mechanical Strength
- Drop test and tensile strength on straps and components.
- Flammability Test
- The mask must not continue to burn after exposure to a flame.
- Compatibility with Filters
- Ensures the mask securely holds the filters and doesn’t leak at connection points.
- Field of Vision
- Must not unduly restrict the wearer’s vision.
🏷️ Marking Requirements:
EN 140-certified masks must be clearly marked with:
- Manufacturer’s name or logo
